What to see..Week end in San Miniato- Sunday or Day 2 of 2

Sunday or day 2:

New walk in San Miniato. Reach the historic center by parking your car in the Palazzo Grifoni car park. On weekdays the car park is used by Credit Agricole employees but on weekends it is free except for some well-marked places.

We then begin the walk on via IV Novembre

If you had breakfast in the apartment you are ready to discover the beauties of the city, otherwise we advise you to stop for breakfast in one of these 2 pastry shops:
Once you have refreshed yourself if you have not visited the Rocca on Saturday, we recommend that you walk along via IV Novembre to reach via Conti, piazza del Seminario, Piazza del Duomo and then climb up to the Tower of Frederick II which can also be visited inside from 11 to 18.

Stop on the Rocca's lawn to admire the view and enjoy that garden one step away from heaven.

Descending, skirt the Duomo to enter the Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso on the left. The church is called this way because there is the 13th century wooden cross which is thought to be miraculous. The interiors are very beautiful and the main access staircase is a wonderful milky frame.

Going down the stairs you are in front of the Town Hall. San Miniato boasts a Municipal House with marvelous frescoed rooms so as to be part of the local museum system. On Sunday it is possible to visit it from 11 to 18 to admire the "Sala delle 7 Virtu" and the Sala del Consiglio. The Sala delle 7 Virtù is used for the celebration of civil rites and is wonderfully frescoed while the Sala del Consiglio is the room where the Municipal Council currently takes place and tells the story of its city with the wall decorations.
Adjacent to the Town Hall is the Loretino Oratory, This chapel was born as a place of worship for the rulers of the Palace to later become a public place thanks to the discovery of the wooden crucifix considered miraculous. The Madonna of Loreto is in the center of the small but very decorated chapel.

We continue our visit to the city by entering the area called "Scioa", a name deriving from the Libyan countryside corresponding to the ancient district of Poggighisi, which has always been a meeting place for pilgrims who traveled the Via Francigena. The descent leads to Piazza Bonaparte which takes its name from the leader Napoleone Buonaparte who had ancestors in San Miniato and who went there to meet his canonical uncle Filippo Buonaparte in search of documents certifying the noble origins of the family, necessary for admission. of Napoleon in the famous military college of Brienne. The uncle's house overlooked this square.
The Buonaparte family residence in San Miniato was the current Palazzo Formichini, now the headquarters of Credit Agricole, a very elegant white building near Palazzo Grifoni (via IV Novembre)

The statue in the center of Piazza Buonaparte is that of Leopoldo II known as Canapone, the beloved Grand Duke who, around 1830, significantly contributed to the cultural and economic development of San Miniato.

On the left side of the square is the Church of San Rocco, a delightful church built in favor of San Sebastiano protector from the contagion of the plague and later San Rocco protector invoked in the same circumstances was brought there. The atmosphere is intimate and sacred and among the various works one can admire with pleasure a fresco by Dilvo Lotti, a modern local painter.
Taking via Maioli which is the road to the left of the Church of San Rocco you will come across a particular house which is the home of the painter Dilvo Lotti. Born in San Miniato, Dilvo Lotti was a multifaceted painter with a vast production that left a wonderful house museum. Book the guided tour before leaving Fondazione San Miniato Promotion phone: +39 0571 42745 segreteria@sanminiatopromo.it

Via Maioli is a characteristic street of San Miniato, on the left you will find the small church of San Paolo and the convent of the Clarisse, cloistered nuns. If you happen to be here around 10 on Sunday, enter this charming place for Mass.

If you have some time left on Mondays from 9 to 13 you can go back to the center of San Miniato and visit the former convent of Santa Chiara, a beautiful place where numerous precious works are preserved, including paintings by Chimenti and Noli me. Tangere by Ludovico Cardi known as Cigoli.
