Truffle hunting is an exciting experience especially because it is an activity that reunites us with nature .. all of us are always hyper-connected with cell phones and we feel lost if we cannot send messages or write on social networks .. here .. forget it for at least 2 hours .. truffle hunting means going to a typical Tuscan wood with poplars, willows and oaks where “civilization” is left behind and you immerse yourself in a world of unique smells and sensations. The creaking of the leaves under the shoes, the colors of the wood, the scents that emanate from the plants are the prelude to our experience. Then … in the company of our truffle hunter but above all his truffle dog (often a lagotto, a breed particularly suitable for finding truffles), in our case with a splendid curl we took a walk in the woods..and our “friend with 4 legs” did not pray … after a few meters he started digging and recovered a beautiful white truffle! The truffle hunter immediately rewarded him with biscuits, then covered the hole..first of all to preserve the habitat of the forest and then..in order not to let other truffle hunters know that the precious tuber magnum is born here! The truffle hunter told us secrets and anecdotes making us forget the famous smartphone pampered by the scenery of the woods and the fun of seeing our dog in action. Our “harvest” at the end was 4 white truffles. Truffle hunting is recommended from October to December, the most prized white truffle period of the scorzone. Furthermore, since the truffle is a seasonal product in some periods of the year it is not possible to hunt because there are no and you must follow a hunting calendar. Curiosity: Arturo Gallerini a truffle hunter who comes from my village, Balconevisi in 1956 found with his dog Parigi a 2,520 gram truffle donated to the then President of the United States Eisenhower! The monument dedicated to Paris is located on Piazza di Balconevisi and on the climb above Piazza Dante in San Miniato. Our hunt was followed by a fantastic lunch of truffle tagliolini and bruschetta! Truffle hunting is a great experience also with children! I suggest to wear closed shoes for walking in the wood.
